What does the term "Latin America" mean to you? Is it a place? A peoples?

When I think of Latin America I think of friends and when I went to Dominican Republic. The music, food, different spiritual beliefs that also causes conflict between each other, I also think about the area not the upside down theory but more of, How big the land is what does it take to be considered a Latin American title place? Do you have to speak spanish to be labeled as a Latin American, and how do they trade money? Like how do they change american money into pesos or what ever it is called.
